Synopsis

"Farewell My Concubine" (霸王别姬) is a renowned Chinese tragic love story deeply rooted in the annals of Chinese history. It narrates the saga of XIANG YU (项羽), the valiant king of Western CHU (楚), as he vies for the unification of China against his rival, LIU BANG (刘邦), the founder of the HAN Dynasty (汉). Amidst an enveloping ambush by LIU BANG's forces, XIANG YU, interpreting the enemy's songs as a harbinger of his imminent defeat, summons his warhorse WU ZHUI (乌骓) to flee, only to find the steed resolutely staying by his side. In this moment of despair, his concubine, YU JI (虞姬), grasps the gravity of their plight. Following a poignant farewell, YU JI takes her life with XIANG YU’s sword. XIANG YU, steadfast in his dedication to his country, combats to his last breath yet succumbs to defeat, burdened with guilt towards his people. His tragic journey culminates beside the WU River (乌江), where he takes his own life, marking a sorrowful end to a tale of love, loyalty, and valor.
